How KolBo works

A plain-language look at how recommendations, search, safety, ads and creator payments work on KolBo.

On this page

  1. How recommendations work
  2. How search works
  3. How we keep the community safe
  4. How ads work
  5. How creators earn
  6. Your data and your choices

How recommendations work

Recommendations help you find videos you’ll enjoy among everything uploaded to KolBo. They appear on Home, in the Up next list, in Clips and in notifications.

Our systems look at signals such as:

  • What you watch and how long you keep watching — finishing a video tells us more than clicking on it.
  • What you do: likes, dislikes, subscriptions, saves, shares and “Not interested”.
  • What’s fresh and popular with viewers like you, and in your language and location.
  • Quality and responsibility signals — content close to breaking our guidelines is recommended less, and authoritative sources are raised for news and health topics.

We don’t pay attention to how many times a video was clicked if people leave right away; we optimize for time well spent, not for clicks.

You’re in control: pause or clear watch history in Privacy settings, remove individual videos from history, or use “Not interested” on any recommendation.

How search works

Search ranks results by relevance — how well the title, description, captions and channel match your words — together with engagement and freshness. Filters let you narrow results by upload date, type, duration and features such as captions or live.

Paying doesn’t change organic search results. Ads in search are always labeled.

How we keep the community safe

  1. Clear rules. Our Community Guidelines say what isn’t allowed, and we update them as new risks appear.
  2. Detection. Automated systems and viewer reports flag content for review, often before it gets many views.
  3. Human review. Trained reviewers make decisions in context and handle appeals.
  4. Consequences. Violations lead to removals, warnings, strikes and, for repeated or severe abuse, termination.
  5. Tools for creators. Comment filters, moderators, held-for-review queues and live chat controls help creators keep their spaces welcoming.

How ads work

Advertisers use KolBo Ads to show skippable, non-skippable, bumper and in-feed ads. Ads fund free access to KolBo and pay creators.

  • Ads only run on videos from channels in the Partner Program, and not on videos made for kids with personalized targeting.
  • Advertisers pay per impression or per view; a skippable ad counts as a view when you watch 30 seconds (or the whole ad, if shorter) or interact with it.
  • If personalized ads are on, ads may reflect your activity on KolBo. Turn them off in Privacy settings.
  • KolBo Premium members don’t see ads on videos.

How creators earn

Creators in the Partner Program share in the revenue their content generates:

  • Ads — 55% of net ad revenue on long-form videos; 45% of the revenue allocated from the Clips ad pool.
  • Memberships — 70% of monthly membership revenue.
  • Highlights, Stickers and Tips — 70% of what fans spend.
  • Video purchases and rentals — 70% of the sale price.
  • KolBo Premium — 55% of Premium revenue is shared based on how long members watch each creator’s videos.

Earnings are calculated daily and paid out monthly once they pass the payout threshold. Revenue from invalid traffic, such as bots or fake views, is removed before payouts.
